Calum writes "Would you believe Seth Godin commissioned an illustration from me?"
I believe it. Because squids are in! Keith's post regarding marketing books and Seth Godin just reminded me that I have to insert a few business books in my reading cycle. After all, how else will I name drop at MBA-ish parties? I will do a post on that in the next week or so, as we enter the Fall season. Monday, August 29

A new day, a new category in Blogware.
Check out these tracks Love Generation by Bob Sinclar. It has a whistle chorus and everything, making it the perfect Brit club anthem. I Predict A Riot by the Kaiser Chiefs. The T.'s #1 pick this week of a track that you won't hear on North American commercial radio.

On the right hand column I have created a new 'Favourites' list, as per official Blogware terminology.
The new Favourites list is what I am waiting for from the Toronto Public Library. When you make a request or 'hold' as the TPL calls it for a book, you are immediately placed in a queue. You are told your number in the queue (ie. 6 of 10). Eventually the books arrives, the library robots, as the Torb and I like to call them, call the house and you can go and pick up your books. Eh voila, free books made easy. Sunday, August 28

On the way home from a MBA get together, Elaine and I were talking books in the taxi. Elaine is reading a book called Elegance and I think its this one, though she couldn't recall the author. She said it was an enjoyable read, I will probably borrow it from her or get it from the TPL. Last time I was with Elaine (and she had just been on holiday), she recommended the interesting and funny book The Devil Wears Prada. This book is much more than typical of the 'Bridget Jones genre'. It is a frightenly accurate portrayal of what it is like to work and succeed in the fashion industry. I know this because Elaine and I were discussing the book with someone who worked at a major global cosmetics firm. She hated working at the cosmetic company and said she cried when she read that book because it was her life in print. Fortunately, she told Elaine and I she quit her job for a better one. Unfortunately, she did not get to execute her leaving as the main character does in The Devil Wears Prada. Friday, August 26

![]() The Toronto Public Library (or PL in the Tdot as the kids call it) is the best service in the city. The TPL's greatest strength is that it has stayed relevant. The branches all over the city reflect the multicultural mix of that community. The librarians and other staff do a fantastic job of providing a service to help people adopt to living in a new country while maintaining links to their old country. And, the TPL has an excellent TPL web based catalogue search system that allows you to request any part of their collection that is in circulation. While the TPL branches are actively used, I am always surprised by the number of people I know who live in Toronto, are avid readers and never use the public library. As my Scottish da would say, 'The books are free at the library'. |
