The public library in Malmo, Sweden has decided to
allow 'humans' to be checked out in addition to books. The idea
is that you could check out a blind person, lesbian or a journalist and
learn more about their lifestyle. The human subjects are prepared
and willing to answer any type of question or potential objection to
their lifestyle. And true to (Scandinavian) form, the library
will provide a cafe where the people can sit and have their chat.
I'm not sure how many homophobic people will take them up on this
offer. But I think this has great potential for young people to
'check out' someone alive to do research into historical events,
professions or other cultures. This is something that would be
very useful and popular in Toronto.
